Camp stops along whanganui river.
Toilets wete overflowing and foul doesnt describe smell. Prefered to use our beautiful sadly couldnt tolerat the stench. Yet the DOC dickie flat camsite near waihi was so clean and faint odour of fresh sawdust. Total opposits. I was embarrased when i saw overseas travellers using disgusting toilets in our not so green environmental country

What a ride!
Did 3 day canoe from Blazing Paddles. Lost one wooden paddle on day two, found it back on day 3! Especially day 3 (to Pipikiri) is challenging. Trip starts nice and sweet paddling downstream...and ends up with rapids that made us tip over twice...and the river gets deep, wide and fast by that time. But all in all very doable, even for us in our 50s. Just make sure you can swim, keep your lifevest on and tie everything. We lost a hat, watershoes and sunglasses ;) It's a beautiful trip and you'll have time to relax and look around although if you want to make the huts/campground before 6pm you can not linger to long.

We paddled downstream through beautiful scenery.
Bridge to Nowhere walk was worthwhile, some birdlife out there. Felt like three days was enough since variation is not plenty in terms of scenery. We collapsed once in the canoe, since we took the wrong part of the way.

We did the Journey for three days in a canoe and had so much fun!
There were not many people on the river, so we were really often completely alone and could enjoy the landscape and the paddling.

3 to 5 day Great Walk, by canoe.
Nice landscape but a little monotonous. Need good weather. 3 days were enough (last day quite long because not much current).

Amazing vegetation, dense bush and lots of green.
Really feels like you are in Jurassic Park. I would recommend seeing the Harahurutu Waterfalls as you lie in a green canopy overhanging a 50m cliff. So peaceful!

We did a three day canoe.
Very good if you need a break from the city. The river and forest around is so wild and quiet. You get to see waterfalls around and mountain goats.

Difficult to reach, quite expensive to hire a canoe.
All the speedboats with their loud engines kind of ruin the fun. Beautiful landscape though.

If you like water and rafting and kayaking and canoeing then it is a must see! You pass some really ancient bush, totally quiet in the canyons.

11!!!
One of the best things done in NZ!
Such an adventure.
We thought it would be nice, kayaking down the river for 5 days, but it was AWESOME!
We expected loooooots of paddling, and of course we did paddle a lot, but there were also lots of very exciting and fun rapids and on lots of places some stream to push you a little in the back :).
The campsites were fantastic and the company we rented our double kayak from (Taumaranui Canoe Hire) was soooo nice and the people there sooo helpful!
The Whanganui Journey --> 500% recommended!
