The Square Kauri is so called because of its square-looking trunk. These give the tree a square form and aid its tenure to its steep ridge-side home. The tree has a girth of 8.76 metres and is 41.15 metres high. It has occupied this spot for an estimated 1200 years. In the 1890’s, workers constructing the road saved it from the saw.
8.5 km from Tapu and 19.5 km from Coroglen along the Tapu-Coroglen Road, is a parking bay. The start of the track is signposted opposite the parking bay.
