Take in the magnificent views of Mt Hooker from the campsite. Fish in nearby Haast River, enjoy short walks or picnics. Be prepared for the mega sandfly onslaught.
Great information boards about the local fauna and flora. Everything is wheelchair accessible, there are picnic tables and a shelter to cook in.
Total fire ban.

Believe everything the other reviews say, THE SANDFLIES ARE MADNESS.
It is truly horrible, it makes the whole campsite the worst ever (besides the sandflies it is very okay, nice spot, flush toilets and a sink). Sandfly spray does not help, nothing helps, the sandflies will attack you whenever they can. Do not get out of the car before it gets dark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have stayed at multiple different campsites, but it seems like all the sandflies of the south island have gathered here to meet, no other campsite was this bad.

I don't understand the positive reviews.
This should be a free campground. It's just a roadside parking with some picnic tables and 4 public toilets. There is good phone signal.
Facilities are mainly used as such: passing people who need a public toilet. Toilets were absolutely disgusting. It's unbelievable the DOC asks money to stay here overnight.
Sandflies were a total nightmare... absurd

Stopped for lunch. Good facilities. Recommend for a stop but can’t rate the campsite as we didn’t stay.

Be warned there are loads of sand flies.

No grass sites for campers and only a couple on the gravel.
And the pictures make it look a lot nicer than reality.

Beautiful spot but a terrible amount of sandflies.
We came late (6pm) and it was already crowded. We booked online in advance but there was only limited space for larger cars like campervans although the website stated that there are 14 of 22 available sites left. Its because you can pay directly at the campsite by cash.

Aptly named, a lovely spot.
Flushing toilets were clean, plenty of space for campers. Nice short walking track beside the river, too.
Not too expensive, but no bigger sinks either. Minimal road noise, just a generally lovely spot.

This campsite was perfect for what we needed.
Only an hour from Wanaka, good nightly rates, quiet enough. No complaints here!

Pretty nice area.
Small and quiet. Being a DOC site you have to fill in a form so dont forget a pen and correct change (learn from our mistake). Beautiful frost on the grass and plants surrounding in the morning.

We passed Cameron Flat camp site but wanted to drive a bit longer.
We then stopped here for the night. Looks less nice than Cameron flat I’d say. A basic rest area along the road. Nothing charming. Long drop toilets. Sandfly apocalypse, forget to have dinner or a beer outside, this was serious sandfly madness. Ranger passed in the morning to check payments.

Nice quiet camp spot just off the road along Haast Pass about halfway between Wanaka and West Coast.
Not alot of room, but beautiful none the less. Pristine creek just next to the camp running into the main river. Just nice.

Perfect spot for an overnight stay.
Level ground and very easy to find. It is quite close to road so you will get a little bit of noise from cars passing by but not a big issue as not many cars in the winter.

Beautiful scenery, comparably big area, water but no drinking water, toilet should flush but they don't - therefore very dirty and smelly.
I hope that council will do something from the money they get and fix WC's.

We stopped for one night, not far from the road but little traffic at night.
Toilets ok but dirty, thanks to dirty people messing them up. Nice grassy areas, cool little walk among the ferns in the forest along the river, went for a dip too. Watch out as this area is sandfly infested. Amazing views.

Easy to find but very small camping ground.
The view from the river is nice but not really suitable to swim. We were there in early February and the sandflies were eating us. There was no toilet paper, no rubbish bins and the few toilets were not functioning properly. One of the worse DOC sites we used.

Only 2minutes drive to the touristy Thunder Creek Falls. Facilities okay. Would give 10 if it wasn't for the sandflies.
