Great location and the men’s shower block was great as was the kitchen.
Women’s was dirty when we were there but there was a change of ownership going on and a confusion in cleaners.
A bit pricey at $60 but probably worth it everything considered.

Friendly staff in the reception, there is a bar as well. Clean bathrooms & kitchen, there is a laundry room as well. Mahia beach is just over the road, there are gorgeous sunsets here over the water. Quite a few flies on the beach which were a pain. Lots of dotterall birds and their nests on the beach near the dunes so beware not to step on them or let dogs disturb them. It was very quiet here in Nov 2022. If you go at the right time you may see a rocket being launched from the rocket lab nearby!

Great location and clean kitchens and amenities - though a male cleaner for the female bathrooms which is a bit awkward when naked trying to juggle dressing a baby and myself!
Also have to boil any water to drink and doesn’t taste great which is a bit hectic when you’re paying $60 a night!

Not happy was placed next to a family with young children.
Children being noisey is understandable being placed in a room when there is vacancies throughout is careless. Had to endure loud crying overnight and throughout the early hours of the morning and when I complained was made to feel it was my fault. An apology was given once this was asked for. The room smelt really foul we had to air spray and air it out and the toilets were grosse I’d recommend sandles in the shower. Never will stay here again.

I think a lot has changed here since the previous reviews.
We paid $44 for two adults at a powered site. The whole place is being tidied up. Kitchen, toilet, bathroom facilities all in good order, fresh lick of paint and decorating. We also used the laundry (two washers and driers @$4 a go) and the Funky Fish cafe at reception which did a mean bacon and egg pie, great coffee and shakes (among other menu items). The playground has been upgraded, there is all kinds of gear for hire, including bikes. On top of all this is the fabulous location - across the road from an awesome beach, as well as being a hop skip and jump away from the Sunset Pub and the local store.
In all, an awesome base for exploring the Mahia peninsula and enjoying a bit of kiwi beach paradise.

By far the most expensive site in 30 we have stayed in, and by far the oldest facilities which must be at least 50 years old.
Paid for internet which was intermittent and the manager had no idea about it. Beautiful peninsula but very poor site.

We stayed for two nights and we’re very pleased with our stay.
The owners were awesome, easy and friendly, they are family oriented people. The facilities were clean and tidy and they are working super hard on upgrading the park. I would stay again definitely. I would like to rank them a 10/10 purely because of the effort that they are putting in.

We stayed January 2016 for a week.
The two new and tidy ablution blocks were closed after our first day, leaving the old, smelly, poorly maintained block as the only option.
The kids couldn't reach the shower controls in the new block.
NO family friendly showers etc - single dad with young girl left with no option. The men's reeked of urine - not helped by once a day cleaning!
The shower heads either dribbled or squirted everywhere but at you. There is only ONE drinking water tap in the whole camp, none of the other water is potable.
VERY expensive for old, poorly maintained facilities. The kitchen was a sty and the hotplates either didn't work or were stuck on 'full', burning everything.
The BBQs were filthy and 2/3 didn't even ignite.
"BMX track" is a joke, even the kids described it as two lumps of dirt and 'boring' - it looks like someone forgot to level some dirt after gardening.
The playground is falling apart and the kids said it 'sucked' and didn't even use it after the first visit to it. Worn out ropes holding it together, no sign of any maintenance this decade.
Very noisy, and the managers were nowhere to be seen - no policing of loud stereos and yelling past 10pm.
Toilet and kitchen cleaning usually occurred while you were using them in the morning!
Overpriced ($200 more than what it costs to stay at Tolaga Bay), worn out, smelly, I hated this dive of a campground and I've been all over our beautiful country.
The peninsula is beautiful, it's an incredible place to visit... just find somewhere else to stay.

Quiet, with space and privacy.
Showers and kitchen blocks run down but fine. Beach fantastic.
No park, pool, games room, or powered sites with views.
Which makes the $62 a night for a powered site for 2 adults and 2 children disappointing. Sad thing is we planned to stay longer but decided to have more nights at Hasting top ten which works out cheaper. So I do think if it was cheaper people would stay longer.....

We spent March 2013 travelling around North Island in a large self-contained camper van.
We visited a lot of different camping places and holiday parks and we’ve reviewed them all for Rankers. We judged them by different criteria from most people. We weren’t interested in playgrounds, paddling pools, trampolines, or all the other facilities for children. Instead we wanted peace and tranquillity, a beautiful location, clean and accessible facilities, and a decent amount of space between sites. We used the holiday parks mostly for one night stops and did not consider them as holiday destinations in their own right. Please read the following review with this in mind.
Beautiful location and very quiet at the time we were there, but the holiday park itself is old and tired. Needs a bit of renovation and maintenance. Good for a quick overnight stop, but no reason to linger. Facilities adequate.

Apart from the 2 new toilet blocks, all the facilities including the motel my inlaws stayed in are old, outdated and need a lot of attention.

Childrens playground was not even worth them playing on.
The onsite takeaways, well very expensive and not very nice.
The camp staff did their cleaning at the oddest times, 8 - 9am to clean the kitchen when people are still having breakfast?
Compared to a TOP 10 park, the high season tariff for camping here is only $2 less.
It a shame as it is a awesome beach and great area to visit.
