Time: 2 hr Distance: 3.6 km to Peach Cove
A reasonable level of fitness, skill and experience is needed to walk the main tracks at Bream Head Scenic Reserve. The hill access leading onto the Mt Lion, Ocean Beach and Peach Cove tracks are all steep although once on the ridge the track becomes undulating and easy going. From here, you can get spectacular, almost aerial views of the coastline.
The track takes you across pasture, and through kanuka and shrubland. It climbs through broadleaf forest until you eventually meet the main Te Whara track. From there you drop down sharply through the forest to Peach Cove and a small, sandy beach with some rocks.
There are alternative routes:
* You can return the way you came or along the main track to Urquharts Bay or Ocean Beach (3 hours)
* Returning via Ocean Beach creates a loop option, as it is approximately 10 minutes walk from the beach back up the road to the Peach Cove car park
* Returning via Urqhuarts Bay it is 3 kms from the Urquharts Bay car park to the Peach Cove car park.
To minimise disturbance to the area, and out of respect to local iwi and their ancestors, please do not venture off the marked tracks.
The Department of Conservation, local iwi the Whangarei Heads Restoration Trust and the community are committed to restoring Bream Head, which includes a re-vegetation programme, weed and pest control. You may see predator traps beside the track. We ask for your safety that you please do not interfere with them.
Bream Head Scenic Reserve is located at Whangarei Heads, northeast of Whangarei City. The start of the Peach Cove track is signposted on the Ocean Beach road. Please park just inside the entranceway as this access is a private driveway.
