Information

Waipapa River Track

Time: 2 days

The Waipapa River Track was a direct through-route to Forest Pools until early 2006. Due to changes in the course of the river, part of the track is no longer open.

Suggested two day tramp: The tramp to Forest Pools begins from the Puketi Recreation Area and takes you to Camp Creek (the recommended camping site). Return upstream 500 metres to pick up the Walnut Track and carry on up Pirau Roadd to take the Pukatea Ridge Route, which eventually runs back down to the Waipapa River Track again and emerges from the Forest at Forest Pools. It is a scenic tramp following the Waipapa River through the heart of Puketi Forest and passes through regenerating shrub land, podacarp hardwood forest, and mature kauri stands.

This track was good in Puketi Forest We went deeply in the forest for five hours.

We crossed four times the Waipapa River during the walk. The end of the track around 2 and a half hours was a bit boring because it was on a gravel road. However, that was a good day.

A nice walk of 8km, which is going through the river and forest.

I put a six because you can easily get lost because of the missing signs.

A nice track, a little muddy (we were there in September), beautiful river and a very quiet environment, not busy at this time.
