The perfect place to have the real pounamu experience I was looking for.
Steve and the crew were amazing and took time and interest to teach me to carve and inform me more about the origin of the stone. I would definitely recommend 100% If you are in Hokitika looking for Jade. This is the place to go.

Steve was very unhelpful ...
left alot of people alone in his studio carving and using tool without supervision ..... a osh hassard I think ...when he was there he spend alot of time talking nasty things about another operator .....who I think isnt operating any more ...... anyway to make matters worse our master pieces were disaster pieces nd Steven took much delight in laughing at us .... avoid at all costs .... not worth the money and time spent ..... go to the Hoki Gorge instead and get a nicely carved jade in one of the many shops....

Steve and his crew offer make your own carvings of your choice in either bone, shell, or jade.
Steve takes you through the process step by step, assisting as needed and answering all your questions. Starting with choosing a design and materials all the way though, Steve patiently offers advice.
I chose to carve in jade, and Steve made sure I picked out the right piece of stone for the project. When things didn't go as planned and my piece broke during the polish phase (which I'm told happens even to the master carvers), Steve made sure to make things right. He told me he always wants his customers to go home satisfied, and indeed he lived up to his promise.
I would highly recommend trying out Bonz 'n Stonz if you are even mildly creative. The process is enjoyable, and you'll end up with a piece all your own for yourself or to give as a gift. It may not be as refined as a piece you would seen in an art gallery done by a master carver, but it will be beautiful and have a story behind it - even better.
