Information

PureTrails New Zealand

We operate supported cycling tours in the beautiful South Island, including the Otago Rail Trail and Alps 2 Ocean Trail. Our tours are well researched, meticulously planned, and expertly led by our team of dedicated guides. Ebikes are available.

We prefer to visit places far from the bustling tourist scene – places that are beautiful, sometimes remote, usually peaceful, and more often than not enhanced by the local communities that host us.

Our supported bike tours are on dedicated cycle trails, or on quiet rural country roads in areas of the country that offer stunning scenery and historical interest. We provide full vehicle support, so that those who do not wish to cycle the full distances may hop on and off as desired. Our tour packages include all transport and dedicated guides, accommodation, and most meals. We use good quality accommodation based on double/twinshare rooms (mostly with en-suite facilities), and catering is wholesome and plentiful. Current tour options include:

Otago Rail Trail
Alps 2 Ocean Trail
West Coast Wilderness Trail
Around the Mountains Trail
Central Otago Trail
Lake DunstanTrail
Roxburgh Gorge Trail
Kaikoura Wine Trail
Canterbury Backcountry Trail

We travelled the Alps2Ocean EASY with Hilary as our leader and it was fantastic.

The sections of the trail that we cycled had amazing scenery. PureTrails provided excellent support, accommodation, food and leadership.

We would happily join them for another cycling holiday.

We wish PureTrails all the best during the difficult months ahead.

I have just completed the Round the Mountain Bike tour with Pure Trails.

It was very well organised with first class accomodation and meals, including lovely picnic lunches, made so enjoyable by the great weather. Thanks to the two "John's" who were such competent and friendly leaders/drivers. Pure Trails greatly enhanced the basic Round the Mountain trail by adding the Te Anau to Manapouri leg. I would love to do another ride with them.

We enjoyed a great trip with Pure Trails, cycling the easy A2O.

As a group of 61-69 year olds, we found the trip meticulously planned, the bikes of excellent quality and the accommodation and meal venues outstanding. Our guide, Terry, briefed us well on all aspects of the trail, so we were prepared for whatever was ahead. A thoroughly great experience and adventure.

We went on the Marlborough Wine Tour and a week later on the Otago Rail Trail.

Both trips were excellent. Pure Trails looks after every detail. Meals were excellent, and we could pre-order daily what we wanted out of four or five choices. Accommodations was great as well. They have a large vehicle with trailer so there was lots of room for people and luggage. Group size was under 10 people which was great. The tour descriptions we received in advance were well detailed and accurate. The hosts were very accommodating with any additional requests. They check in with you along the trail and make sure one takes the correct turns, leaving no worry about getting lost. Cycles were top notch with trip computers on them. They offer additional options to start your tour or end your tour in a location other than Chridtchurch. Can't say enough good things!

My wife, a cycling novice, and I completed the Central Otago Rail Trail in March 2016.

The bikes provided were in excellent condition. The guide (Joyce) was superb, and fun. The accomodation was excellent and the food provided was also beyond reproach. The side trips including curling were great fun, and the group of 13 rapidly coalesced and enjoyed each other. The scenery was extraordinary and we were lucky with the weather with a little rain and mist but mostly sunshine and clear views.

We intend to return soon to do another grade 1 tour and would absolutely recommend Pure Trails for anyone with any level of cycling experience.

The trip was extremely well organized; food and accommodation was excellent. John K. was a happy, helpful, knowledgeable and unflappable guide. The bikes suited the terrain. The route was well chosen with a variety of bike path surfaces and scenery.

My husband and I went on the Alps2Ocean cycle trail with PureTrails New Zealand in January 2016.

We had a fantastic time. The route itself is beautiful, but challenging for a non-cyclist like myself, however I felt a real sense of achievement in finishing the 314km route.

PureTrails were a great outfit to travel with. Everything was well organised, accomodation was basic, but clean and well located, the bikes were very good and ideal for the route and the food selections were good, hearty and tasty ... just what you needed after a day of riding. Our guide, Peter, was great. He made sure we all knew where we were going, got there and had fun along the way. He was a fountain of information and really enjoyed what he was doing.

I would recommend both the route and PureTrails. It was a great experience.

    What an amazing experience!

My husband and I completed the Ride the Hurunui ride in a smaller than normally accepted group and we had an experience way beyond our expectations. Peter was a knowledgeable and interesting guide who stepped in to replace Hillary at the last minute as she had caught chicken pox from her children. Peter's wife, Chris, joined us at the Mt Lyford Lodge and walked the Kaikoura Peninsula with us. She proved to be a fountain of information just like Peter. Every aspect of the tour - bikes, accommodation, transport vehicles and support were all top quality and we could not fault a thing. It proved to be a really different way to "see NZ"! My husband has been to NZ about a dozen times but only to snow ski and it was my first trip so for a pair of Aussies who knew little about what NZ had to offer, we came away with wonderful memories that not many visitors would experience. We chose an easy ride because I only took up cycling when I retired last Christmas but found the riding to be well rated and within my capabilities. In fact, it left us hungry for more and we are already planning our next trip which will likely be the Otago Trail. Absolutely without doubt, it will choose to book with Pure Trails New Zealand - you cannot go past them.

For anyone wanting to experience an extremely well organised, fun, challenging biking adventure in stunning surrounds - this is for you!

My primary goal was to cycle in NZ and to have the organisation, planning and regional information/knowledge provided locally. Hilary and John K provided all of these things and more during my 5 day Mackenzie Country trip. From the time we were fitted for the bikes to the time we were dropped off at the hotel at the conclusion of the trip everything was managed professionally, with great efficiency, flexibility and good humour. As previous reviewers have also noted the accommodation and food were fantastic and the interesting and knowledgeable commentary added yet another degree of enjoyment. Thanks to John and Hilary for making this such a wonderful and memorable holiday and to my happy band of co travellers too.

Recently toured the Tasman Great Trail.

5 days of absolute magical cycling in rain free weather. The organisation from pre trip advice to the actual daily activities was superb. Tour guide John was efficient, friendly and an absolute expert on every thing NZ.

Nothing was a trouble to John including those "lost" moments we all had even after pretty clear directions! John would always proceed to any point that required further instructions so the confidence to freewheel along was never a problem.

The accommodation and food were spot on, all high quality and enjoyable for those important "relaxation" moments.

    We will be back,

I booked to do the Great Taste tour thinking it was called that by PureTrails.

I discovered that is the name of the particular cycle track we used. Regardless of that I think it is a perfect name for PureTrails to call this trip as it gave me a GREAT TASTE of NZ, cycling, food, accommodation, company ,guides on a PureTrails trip. I know this sounds boring but last year I did the West Coast Wilderness mountain biking with Pure Trails.

Wrote a rave review. Told my husband / friends about it and this year I did it again. Has to be one of the BEST trails in NZ. We had fine weather (again) which was a bonus but some of the most pristine and spectacular scenery. Diverse and exciting. We cycled the Wild West Coast tour which was extremely well organised.

Five days without rain! Being mature cyclists we had to walk up hills on two or three occasions, but we managed the whole distance with the younger people.; :Plenty of variety in areas ridden - bush, coast, farmland, plus visits to ghost mine, Pancake Rocks, Oparara Arch & places off the beaten track. Saw a lot we would have missed if on our own. Our guide had great knowledge of the area.. Good accommodation & meals.

My wife and I rode two of their tours in quick succession, the Tasman Taste and the Hurunui and really enjoyed ourselves.

(Especially going downhill, adds my wife.) Amazingly, Hilary and colleagues did so much meticulous research into their routes that they were very often flat or down hill. This reflects that many of the tours are ideal for older cyclists who want to enjoy the wonderful scenery as much as been first up the mountain.

I really enjoyed the Hurunui Tour, especially the very wet day riding the track that follows the Clarence River through Molesworth Station country. We were very wet and muddy at the end of it but all the hotels were excellent with welcome hot water!

The penultimate day was a long descent to Kaikoura, when we were fit enough not to notice the climbs and could appreciate the fantastic countryside.

We plan to come back and do some more when we can, having made such good friends with our cycling "team" and with our guides and drivers.

    Highly recommended.

We did the Hurunui ride with 8 riders over 5 days.

The tour was excellent with good accommodation and good food. The ride is a mixture of cycling and visiting assorted attractions and vineyards along the way. It would not be a challenge for a serious cyclist however the two strong serious cyclists in our group very much enjoyed the experience. There was occasional gravel on the ride which needs great respect as even experienced cyclists can come to grief on such a surface. Highly recommended and we hope to do another of PureTrail's trips. An excellent experience; two relatively unfit mid-60s cyclists (with no recent experience), in a group of 13 friends and colleagues, we had a great time.

Well planned; knowledgeable, friendly guide; top accommodation, high quality bikes, good food, well-paced, etc. Not a challenge for serous cycluts, but an excellent experience for mere mortals and ordinary people. If you don't enjoy this trip, it's your own fault.

10 from Australia had a marvellous 5 days with PureTrails.

While we traversed gravel paths, something we are not familiar with here, we grumbled a bit but got soon accepted them for what they are. PureTrails is an excellent team of professionals. Johns care, commentary and driving skills were comforting; we never felt worried. The food on the Central Otago Rail ride was constant, plentiful and excellent. The bed rooms were brilliant - in all it was much more than we expected. We will probably do another PureTrail ride one day.

The Southern Lakes and Mountains Explorer was a wonderful tour, combining a diverse range of sceneries and experiences.

The guides were knowledgeable and personable, helping to ensure a very relaxed and comfortable group. All our accommodation had been carefully selected to include not only different styles, but wonderful surroundings and outlooks. Our meals too, were all excellent. It was exactly the sort of holiday I wanted - well planned, relaxed, quality food and experiences, no glitches - but which clearly requires a lot of research, planning and local knowledge to pull off effectively. Well done PureTrails!
