Great people to deal with.
Very helpful and pleasant. The van was a good layout, but as experienced motorcaravaners for over 25 years, we found it rattled a lot and made talking difficult when driving.

We had a brand new van 3 berth but 3rd bed was not comfortable for an adult.
There were no instruction books left in van to assist if anything went wrong. Most unhelpful. We were late arriving at the depot due to unforeseen circumstances but didn't really think it was an appointment as such and not a big deal otherwise I would have phoned on my mobile. The man in the office was so rude, too busy shouting he didn't announce who he was, and did not give me a chance to explain, it was like a ships horn going off as soon as I entered the office. He wasn't the least bit concerned if we had encountered problems getting to Auckland. If we had not paid so much money we would have walked straight out again. I have never been spoken to like that ever. He even spun a yarn saying people had been waiting at the airport for an hour well if that had been the case he double booked. I sent a couple of emails whilst on our travels as they didn't give us enough bedding or cutlery or crockery ! One reply was downright rude. This experience was very upsetting, in our stay in NZ we encountered so many lovely people but he sticks out a mile in my mind. Would not recommend Walkabout Rentals to my enemy.

On the whole, the service and vehicle has been good.
Had some issues with our stove, but staff have been very helpful over the phone. Great deal on insurance and their bond was much more reasonable than other companies. Plus we get hotspot internet within our camper for no extra cost. Overall, we are very happy.

Paid them more than $15K for a two-month motorhome rental in NZ, only to get billed an extra +$1700 for a small dent in the roof.
Not only that, more than 1.5 months has passed from the end of my rental and they still haven't returned the mere $267 left from the security deposit...
Unbelievably bad service!

Good renting company - reliable.
Good quality / price ratio. Negative points - seat belts at the back - not safe. No 'self contained' sticker.

We rented a Luxury Fiat Prestige Campervan built in Italy.
I'll start with why we chose Walkabout. A friend rented from them a year ago and had a positive experience. We liked that their vans were new, diesel and agile for the NZ roads. And that diesel tax was included in the rental and that their prices were good value. Other than that our experience was not desirable. Before we left Canada my emails to Walkabout would go unanswered for up to two weeks. And if I hadn't sent a follow up asking why I was not getting a response I likely would never have heard. At one point I sent a sharp email complaining about the service and reminding them of the amount of money we are spending (60 day rental) and that it is complicated planning a trip halfway around the world. I got a reply the same day saying they didn't like my tone. On a positive note, when we had trouble with the van the owner (Shane) was always easily reachable by phone. However he often tried to convince us that our trouble was operator error. Which for the most part it wasn't. The fridge that took forever to light and in the end would not light. And the fridge door that would not remain locked so imaging how many spills that happened travelling the twisty NZ roads before we wisely bandaged it shut for travel. The cable on the satellite TV dish that wouldn't allow it to rotate properly. The water heating system that wouldn't heat water. It was a faulty window safety switch that I repaired with a piece of cardboard to make a connection. At one point I had a conversation with the owner about dropping into their repair centre in Silverdale north of Auckland. He said he would send me the contact info and some information on the best beaches nearby which never happened. Minus the problems noted this is a nice, self contained luxury vehicle.

- the van was a little sticky inside when we got it.
We had a Fiat Ducato campervan, 2 berth
Positive:
- nice interior
- good condition of the van
Negative:
The only pan was really ugly, we never used it.
- the wastewater tank was clogged, so we had to spend quite a lot of time at the dump stations to empty it. We did not even get an answer on an email from the rental company regarding this issue.
- the camping chairs were in a bad condition. The rental company said they are complimentary so we should not complain about it.
- on our return our issues were talked down, saying that all hirers treat the equipment badly etc. instead of being just a little sorry about these things.
Overall we would not choose this company again, especially the service is not very premium.

Motor is not so strong in mountains.
Fridge door (bottlebag) falls frequently. But it was the first time for us so we cannot compare.
