Car still had rubbish in the boot when we picked it up.

Windscreen was really dirty. Wasn’t told by counter staff that our car could be found under a Hertz sign after walking the carpark. Disappointed as have used Thrifty many times in the past.

I picked up this car from the kerikeri airport and was told I would get a refundable deposit.

I was uncertain about this as it wasn’t mentioned on the web site. Also noted I was charged for remote location fee and airport fee. What the hell? This was not on the web either and you put the business there for clients from an airport.

I looked inside and found documents left from the previous person 16 days previous. Has the car not been cleaned or inspected?

Stay away from these scamming pricks

    Hirers BEWARE!!!

Even at that very moment when I paid over the $250 security fee, deep down my gut was telling me I’d have trouble with it being returned.

The hired vehicle was returned four days earlier and Thrifty subsequently confirmed they’re happy with condition of the car, I could expect a full immediate refund.

To date, I have not been refunded.

During, my subsequent enquiries to the Wellington Airport branch of Thrifty Rental Cars, I am dealing with staff who are feeding inconsistencies, hang up before I have completed my query and or are fobbing me off. All the while moneys belonging to myself that was paid to Thrifty in good faith, is not forthcoming as per their original sales pitch and contract agreement.

As of this writing, I am now proceeding a complaint to The Commerce Commission NZ.

In closing, I am sure there are other car rental operators throughout NZ, who will provide a far superior, more trustworthy, helpful and professional service than this crappy lot.

    Thrifty makes the collection fast.

They give you the keys and go kind of company. Good for people in a rush, but bad for nervous individuals that need the personal touch and extra guidance.

    Great price.

Agent at the domestic terminal transferred our reservation from the international terminal (saved us a long walk!) and gave us a car with less than 10KM. Drop off in Wellington was painless, no surprises YAH!

Use Thrifty car rentals all the time from Auckland airport using my New Zealand AA discount.

Can't fault it. Not sure why there are so many negative reviews. I can get a small, late model runabout for $69 per day with nil excess, pick up from the airport (no waiting for pick up and taken out somewhere near the airport thus taking another half an hour). I'm a blue chip member as well which is their loyalty club. Just have to make sure I book in time to get the AA deal.

This is my first choice, when you start looking at some of the secondary rental costs, by the time you add on for nil excess insurance you are getting up to the Thrifty all inclusive rate. I'm a budget traveller but Thrifty is certainly not a budget rental company judging by the pristine condition of their cars and the fact that they are at the airport. Will use every time if they are available.

I am editing this to advise that the general manager resolved the problem and has spoken to the staff members involved, in order to improve customer service.

Thrifty rental car was total rubbish, a terrible rattle in the dashboard that was not heard until on a bumpy Canterbury 100km/hr road, but the rental “manager” refuses to believe the recording/video sent to prove the point. One windscreen wiper also scraped and scratched but according to this same “manager “, a “mechanic “ found all was well.

The customer is clearly always wrong at this particular agency, not what one would expect in New Zealand.

    Never again.

    I booked a Thrifty car from Rentalcars.com.

By mistake clicked twice, next minute i cancelled one car and they charged $80 cancellation charge. They advertise No cancellation charge on main page and charging anyway.

We picked up a car from Thrifty Christchurch airport. They said we will fill up the tank at a discounted price if we return with empty tank, so you can save time. I agreed. We returned car at Queenstown airport with half filled tank. They charged me for a full tank of petrol and did not refund for the left over half tank. They said we empty the tank and refill it, so your left over petrol is waste.

    Its one type of fraud.

It is the policy of Thrifty.

    I don't recommend Thrifty.

    Absolutely appalling.

What is the point of having a pick up time when there is no one at the office desk? There was a sign with multiple numbers to call if there was no one attending the booth, yet none of them went through to anyone. Eventually we called the general thrifty contact number which wasn't helpful either. All they did was try to call the office desk which I had told them was unattended. Was then told to wait 15 mins while they try to call someone to come in. No one was able to be contacted and was then told to wait 2 hours until the next booking pick up by another person. At least give us a call to tell us that they won't be available until a later time!! What an absolute waste of time and ridiculous customer service!! Stay away from this "service".

We had a car rental with Thrifty on the South Island of New Sealand for 5 weeks.

The car itself was fine and enjoyable. But the Business of Thrifty itself is strange. As we have taken the car at the Airport, we have been asked for a deposit for the fuel. I guess this is normal and will be repaid if we return the car filled up. So they told us - but the deposit was never repaid. As we claimed it we got the Information we should have returned the car as empty as possible.

I can only tell everybody: Be careful when renting a car with THRIFTY!

What a shady business practice - specifically the Queenstown location.

After having a confirmed reservation for a compact car at a given price, upon arrival we were only offered a different car at a higher price. Upon dispute, the corporate office of Thrifty/Dollar was happy to give us a refund for the additional amount, but then they said that this specific location was independently owned, so it was out of their hands. This location in Queenstown was unresponsive to emails, bad at planning, and not customer-friendly at all. Rent elsewhere.

Be so careful in this endeavour punters, very unsavoury believe me.

Hired a rental car from Thrifty Dunedin airport under Rentalcars.com based in the UK.

When arriving to pick up said car advised attendant that i didn't need it for it's entirety and car would be brought back three days early,a new contract was then made up to reflect this situation.

Vehicle was brought back on day to fulfill contract in condition i collected it in.

Advised Rentalcar.com of change in circumstances and additionally warned them that their website was flawed and dishonest because of the fact whilst they glowed about how you could extend your hire, conversely not a word mentioned about bringing it back early.

After numeous emails between myself and Rentalcars.com and them with Thrifty, they were adamant that even though i had a valid contract with Thrifty, they were just not going to reimburse me for the three days not used, supposedly they would like to but Thrifty were adamant,NO.

So two points here to remember, keep the middle man out,in this case Rentalcars.com and do what i do,stay well away from Shifty.

Hired a car in New Zealand for 2 weeks from Auckland International.

When we went in, they quoted higher than the online quote. Disputed that successfully. Then they charged for using credit card. Probably out of their control but, annoying. Everything was quoted in NZD too so watch out for the difference in quote. Another thing, we ended up having 1 driver as we were both under 25 which means we had to pay a $180 surcharge. If we had 2 drivers it was going to be an extra $180 plus an extra driver fee for $20.

We were quoted and paid for an ECar and were actually given an Mcar... Notified them at drop off and said we'll get a refund. Return home from trip to a $44 refund. Not happy.

Also, if you put a certain drop off time, stick to it. I rang asking how much for a later drop off and they quoted $65 for an hour, $90 for three. Rubbish. Especially when you leave it for late afternoon anyway so highly unlikely it was needed or a priority.

Car was a 2016 Holden Spark that didn't even get 500km a tank. Waste of money for fuel.
