A nice train ride into the gorge, with lots of photo opportunities.
The trains are the old 'Mitsus', since new ones do not fit through the tunnels. Lots of side information while you just 'sit' and enjoy the ride.

Despite the cloudy weather, this was enjoyable.
The commentary was available all over the train (even outside), and there were ample photo stops/points.

Everyday from Dunedin Railway Station to Middlemarch and back - beautiful journey up an impressively built railway.

It should be a scenic route, but at that time we had seen enough of other much more scenic landscapes and places.

Touristy and at $89 quite expensive.
I enjoyed the scenery but something I can't put my finger on was missing. Maybe an authentic train would have helped.

A really unusual and spectacular way to see the gorge country from Dunedin.
It was a relaxing experience. Plenty of food and drink, timely stops and the volunteers were just great. Commentary was also excellent. Well worth doing. Added bonus were the quaint stops with mini markets selling wares. Highly recommend.
