The South Island is amazing and we are super stoked that we did it in a campervan.
We got a budget campervan with shower and toilet at $170 per day from kiwi campervans. It pretty much had everything we needed and worked well enough for our holiday.
However, the foam sections that made up the bed didn't fit our camper, so we had a very lumpy bed with ditches each night. The pillows were terrible and stained a dark brown. We were provided 2 thin, single donnas and no blanket. And it was freezing, even in February. The fitted sheet provided had numerous holes. The complimentary chairs and 'table' were broken and the table was a stool... couldn't use it as a table.
The 'free pick up and drop off' advertised cost us $60 return from north of Christchurch.
The van was economical and honestly wasn't bad if you're thinking it will be a step up from camping. It's just a shame that it could have been better with new bedding - which isn't expensive to occasionally update.

Wild West in NZ!
I have rented a Happy 2 camper for 20days/19nights in Feb 2016. I compared a number of companies and went by the price – well you get what you are paying for.
When things go smooth i.e. no accident, no breakdown etc you might have a good experience. However my Camper had 450k on the clock!!
However if that’s not the case things go pear-shape big time – a shocking mix of incompetence and unprofessionalism.
On day four I had an accident as a result of which the camper was unable to drive and had to be towed back to the yard (the accident was not my fault – witnessed and recorded by the police).
1. Calling the office number I was given for such cases caused confusion what to do. After calling forth and back between headoffice and Auckland it turned out that towing in case of accidents is NOT covered – check the fine print – and hence I would have to pay for this. The police fortunately organised this as I still stood in the middle of the NH1 while no one from Kiwi had a clue what to do and how to organise towing. No procedure in place here!
2. A replacement car was not available and also – as I learned – I was not entitled for a replacement/compensation. (read the fine print)
3. Nevertheless a refund was granted for the remaining days I couldn’t use the camper. The amount was calculated rather arbitrarily to their favour.
4. All I was left with was a doggy email confirming that the contract was released and a certain amount was transferred back to my account.
5. The 2000 NZD deposit for the insurance where taken in the second I recorded the accident (apparently they can move quickly if they want). Still waiting for an official invoice for the repairs undertaking and a reconciliation of the deposit (2000NZD). Very unlikely that I will receive this.
Do yourself a favour and just Google Kiwi Campers – if you are still confident to jeopardise your vacation here go ahead! Not bad people but simply incompetent and incapable!

An older van which has given us no problems.
Travelwise the cushions are poor. Problems keeping fridge door closed. Poor quality duvet, pillows had to be replaced. Smell coming from grey water tank at intervals - young man in Christchurch office very helpful. Tourist radio and GPS excellent.

I am writing about Kiwi Campervans, Carlyon Road, nr.
Nelson. I wish I'd read the reviews about this company on the internet before booking. If cheap is all that you are looking for then go for it but if you get problems they do get a bit defensive. They don't like to be told about faults of which, in our case, there were many. They take it all rather personally. The campervan got us from A to B but that's about the best that can be said about it. When things developed faults or didn't seem to be working properly I thought it helpful to tell them. I imagined that they might be interested enough want to improve things and make repairs for the next customer. All I got was a strangely evasive response and an aggressive tone. Very odd.

This unfair review was posted 3 years ago and it still rankles me! These clients booked through an agency and never corresponded directly with us. They complained to the agent without giving us the chance to sort things out. The supposedly unsatisfactory towels were new and there were not enough sheets for their liking!? We maintain our vehicles to the best possible standard with above average equipment (which is what customers tell us!). The clients bought more sheets and more towels and wanted to be reimbursed and were angry when we didn't comply. On top of all they left the camper van filthy and returned it late. My advice: treat others like you want to be treated!
