Self Contained Campers can stay on a choice of 10 or 11 grassy roadside areas, next to the sand dunes, adjoining the beach.
Max 3 nights.
No facilities. It's a grassy roadside verge only. Please respect this amazing space.
Very small area, maximum 2 or 3 campervans at each site.
Look for the "Restricted Camping' signs at each grassy verge.
Mahia Golf Club, over the road, is one of NZ's great 9 hole courses. If golf is your thing, don't miss this one.
Also, a great viewpoint for rocket launches on the right day.
RANKERS TAKE - Ormond Road Freedom Camping is right next to Mahia's main road. It ranks very high as a beachfront location, but less high for privacy.
You're more public here than nearby Opoutama Reserve Freedom Camping, which is down a side street less than 1km away.
If you're not self contained, then be warned, you'll probably get a $200 fine if you try and stay here.

There are around 10 or 11 roadside grassy areas dotted along Ormond drive between Opoutama Beach Reserve Freedom Camping and Mahia Township.
Look for the Camping sign at each one. Each site isn't very private as you can expect cars to be driving past your campervan very regularly. They're also generally pretty tight spaces without much room. But as there are so any of them, there's a good chance you could get one of these spaces to yourself.
I'd personally check out Opoutama Reserve less then 1km to the west of here. But if you're looking for a point of difference away from others at Opoutama Reserve, then it might be worth a looksy here. If you park parallel to the road, with your door pointed toward the beach (away from the road), then it will improve your privacy for sure :)
No facilities. You need to be fully self contained.
