This is a fine remnant of forest, which once bordered the Hinau River. There are some good looking matai and a couple of fine totara.
Just north of the Hapuku River, 12 km north of Kaikoura, turn into Puhi Puhi Road. This unsealed road leads 5.6 km over a bridge to the Puhi Puhi Scenic Reserve. There’s a grassed area for kids, a picnic table and toilet.
The even metalled track loops through the forest.
Argillaceous limestone rocks are visible on the far side of the stream.
The understorey is mahoe, pigeonwood, supplejack and lemonwood. Some of the tawa present are the most southerly on the east coast of the South Island. Ngaio also reaches near its inland limit.
