Author And Researcher
I'm Marios, delivering the best of Aotearoa's nature walks to your device.
I've personally walked hundreds of New Zealand's tracks and spent months in libraries uncovering interesting information on New Zealand/Aotearoa. And you'll find a slice of that research on this page - enjoy!
4.2 km one-way | 2 hours one-way
The views from Beacon Hill Lookout show the intimacy of Breaker Bay below and the more distant vistas to Pencarrow and Baring Heads.
Gulls and gannets swoop and soar on the updraughts by the cliffs. On the eastern side the Interislander negotiates Barrett Reef and Steeple Rock (site of the Wahine’s grief). To the west, jets battle the wind to ferry passengers elsewhere.
The track later descends to Ataturk Memorial Park, with its touching inscription and soil sample from Gallipoli. Tarakena Bay and Rangitatau Pa are at the end of the track.
In Seatoun, follow Inglis Road to Pass of Branda, where the start of the track is signposted.
The other end of the walkway is at the parking area in Tarakena Bay, 2 km further along Breaker Bay Road.
Visit https://wellington.govt.nz/recreation/enjoy-the-outdoors/walks-and-walkways/beyond-the-city/eastern-walkway for a downloadable map.
The track is well-formed and marked with orange directional arrows. The surface is even and has plenty of steps on steeper sections.
Return via the same track or walk along Breaker Bay Road back to Pass of Branda.
