A smorgasboard of Wellington in an easy urban stroll.
The start of the walk is at the entrance to Bolton Street Memorial Park.
It concludes at Shorland Park, Island Bay.
The entire track is comprehensively marked with orange directional arrows on posts. It can be completed in stages on a number of days and public transport can be used to return to your start point.
The track passes through the cemetery in Bolton Street Memorial Park and continues through the Botanic Gardens. After Kelburn Park it follows roads to Central Park, then crosses Prince of Wales Park.
The least interesting section is through Rugby League Park, MacAlister Park and Berhampore Municipal Golf Course.
Spectacular views south are offered from Tawatawa Ridge, as it descends to the suburbs of the south coast and the walk’s conclusion at Island Bay.
The bizarre and interesting sculptures of the Botanic Garden are worthy points for contemplation in the peaceful surroundings.
Aro Valley and its complement of cafes are suitable points for refreshment.
Central Park has a very English feel, although interspersed with exotic specimens are tree ferns and nikau palms.
Views from the Tawatawa Ridge beckon the sea. The whiff of salt carries on the wind and the wilds of Cook Straight and its familiar landmarks are all visible.
From Oku Street Trig the views of Island Bay show the snug houses tucked into the hillside above Taputeranga Island.
