Hydrabad Wreck

1 km return | 30 minutes return

This is probably the best preserved and most accessible shipwreck in the North Island. The wreck now lies parallel to the beach and is partially exposed tilting towards the sea, it’s bough facing north. It’s been inundated with sand, but the hull remains intact. The rusting bough and stern sections and ribs of the hull protrude through the sand, giving a good impression of the vessel’s size.

Access

Waitarere Beach is signposted along Waitarere Beach Road from SH1, 7 km north of Levin. At the settlement, head south along Rua Avenue to the intersection with Hydrabad Drive, park, and head south along the beach.

The walk is possible at all tides. The sand makes a good walking surface.

European History

The Hydrabad was constructed in Scotland in 1865 as a cotton trading ship. Heavy seas and gale force winds forced the ship ashore on June 24th 1878, when bound from Lyttelton to Adelaide. The captain ordered the anchors to be dropped but the massive waves ruptured the cables and ran the ship aground. Fortunately, all 33 passengers and crew survived.
