Information

Kairakau Loop Track

800 m return | 20 minutes return

The 35 hectare reserve is 125 metres above sea level and supports a mature lowland forest including matai, kahikatea, tawa and titoki. Imagine when the entire inland region of Hawke’s Bay was smothered in this type of forest. Today a pitiful few remnants are sporadically dotted over the Hawke’s Bay landscape. Ditto the county over. Ditto the world over. At least there are still some places with native biodiversity left. Best look after them.

Walking Track

Access

Elsthorpe Scenic Reserve is just south of Elsthorpe village, alongside Kairakau Road. There is a small grassed area beside the road for parking.

Track

This even track crosses a boardwalk bridge then loops through the lowland podocarp forest.
