Walking Track

Timing

The walk is only possible three hours either side of low tide

Access

From Kawakawa Bay, follow Kawakawa Bay Coast Road for 4.3km to the carpark at Waiti Bay. The road hovers above the idyllic indentations of the coastline under a canopy of pohutukawa. At Waiti Bay there are toilets and picnic benches. The start of the track is signposted along the beach.

Track

Cross the rocky headland to the south and walk along the fine sands of Tuturau Bay. At the far side of the small creek after the bach, a stepped track climbs the headland behind Papanui Point. For the final 30 minutes you are shrouded under the shade of regenerating coastal forest. The track is stepped, but can be slippery with muddy hollows between steps.
