Lovely and quiet freedom camping spot by DOC with an amazing view, shelter, dump toilet.

One of our favorites while bikepacking through the country. You will find mainly cyclists there because of the great ride. No water tap, you can take and treat water from the lake.

Best campsite during our tandem tour of the South Island.

Best views, best showers (lake) and best pitches (only one other family there). Toilet and BBQ, all free. We arrived by steamer and cycled the next day on our tandem to Mavora Lakes on the gravel road. Quite a hard bike trip on the gravel road and with 2 water crossings. But the whole trip was well worth it to be able to stay at Walter Peak. Might you don't tell everyone as the loneliness made it so special!

Should have known that before I tried to go there. Google maps walks over water...
